Rare Start for Oughton in CONCACAF Champions League
Former All White midfielder Duncan Oughton was given a rare start for Columbus Crew in their 1 nil CONCACAF Champions League loss to Mexican powerhouse club Santos overnight. Oughton, who has played nearly 140 matches for the Crew in his MLS career played the full match, having been used only as a substitute so far in Columbus' season. After two matches, Columbus now have a win and a loss and sit second in their pool, with the first two sides progressing to the knock out phase of the competition. The CONCACAF tournament has been a tough nut for MLS sides to crack. In fact, the last MLS team to lift the trophy was LA Galaxy in 2000, a team whose MVP that year happened to be veteran All White midfielder Simon Elliott.

This is a random comment, but I was at the Rapids Crew game earlier this year and when the players come off the field they walk through the vocal supporters section.
ReplyDeleteAs the players came off the field at full time some guy was giving Duncan crap about his hair and he went absolutely off his rocker, swearing and nearly go in a fight with the guy. Highly entertaining but at same time I was a tad shocked from the lack of self control of a so called seasoned pro.
Unfortunately this is very much a scond tier competition so not a great sign for Duncan.
ReplyDeleteI have to disagree Mr. Juno, any kiwi playing professional football is a fantastic achievement at any level, due just to the lack of support at home and having to make it on your guts and will.
ReplyDeleteWith our resources we can't expect the AW starting 11 to all be playing in the EPL.
There's no need to justify his career, he's been a pro for 10 years and it's great to see. The point I was making though is that MLS teams rate this competition well down their own list of importance so him getting a start is not an indication that he might get a return to the starting lineup at the Crew in the MLS proper.
ReplyDeleteInteresting point you bring up about if the MLS teams take the CONCACAF Champions League seriously....I'm not sure, their squads are small and their travel is significant, maybe some teams do and some don't its hard to tell.....I will say the MLS needs to start performing in this competition to get more credibility.
