Tommy Smith Set to Start Tough Season Opener

While his young All White defensive partner Winston Reid has been making all the headlines with his big money move to West Ham, Tommy Smith also has a big season lying in wait for Ipwich Town in the Championship. Smith looks to have secured one of the centre-back starting spots for the Tractor Boys. A combination of his World Cup form ("I thought he played reasonably well" were the generous words of his manager Roy Keane) and an injury to experienced Irish centre back Damien Delaney have swung wide a door that Smith had begun to prize open last season. Play well and he can cement himself as a starting centre-back in the Championship at only 20 years. First up he has a tough assignment away to expected title contender Middlesbrough on Saturday.

Meanwhile in League 1, Rory Fallon is expected to lead the line in Plymouth's big south coast derby against Southampton over the weekend.
